Beaches

Lyme Regis has several beaches; the main beaches, which has been recently rebuilt with imported material from France and the Isle of Wight, consist of two parts, a sandy beach and a shingle beach.

To the West of the town is Monmouth Beach, which is named after James Duke of Monmouth who set out to overthrow James II and claim the throne for himself, after he landed there in 1685. He and many of his followers were later executed by Judge Jeffreys.

To the East of Lyme Regis is the Gun Cliff Walk, a promenade fronted with rock armour running towards East Cliff. Its superstructure hides a state of the art sewerage scheme completed by South West Water in January 1995 and is buttressed by rock armouring to protect the new sea defence walls from the worst ravages of the tides. The scheme not only attracted the accolade of Winner of the Secretary of State for the Environment's Award for a Scheme of Environmental Excellence and the prestigious Civic Trust Award, presented in June 1997, but also brings local bathing waters up to stringent EC standards.

Beyond Gun Cliff Walk is East Cliff and the beach running towards Charmouth, above which is Black Venn, Europe's largest dynamic landslip.

The Marine Conservation Society has recommended that the main bathing beach (front beach) has achieved the water quality standard required to be considdered for entry in the "Good Beach Guide", being amongst the cleanest in the country.

Dogs and the beaches

Dogs are permitted on the beaches to the East and West of the town all year round. They are permitted on the main shingle beach and the sandy beach near the harbour during the Winter, but are banned from these two beaches between 1st May and 30th September.
